MG Wing Zero Custom: WIP Part 3

Okay, a bit of progress today. But first, Gundam Head mod!

Head on the left, eyes/face on the right
So, heads are usually split into 2 parts, down the middle, from right to left. In this case is it’s front to back, which is weird, but the same principles apply. The problem is that

1) there’s a big seam line where there shouldn’t be
2) there’s the eyes and faceplate to paint, both of which needs to be in place for the head to be glued together

The Gundam head mod is modding the head in such a way that you can put the face in after fixing the seams and painting the head.

Started by cutting the bottom of these two peg holes where the face normally plugs into. This is so you can insert from underneath the head once it’s glued together.

I also needed to shave off some of the pegs in order for it to fit into the holes I made (circled above). Not pictured is the cut I made to separate the head sensor, that has to be inserted separately after the head is completed.

Once that’s completed the face can slide in after the head has been glued together. I’ll glue it in after the painting is done to secure it.

Okay now for painting.

White parts ready for painting

This is my setup used for painting. Satay skewers, some blu-tac, and double sided tape, this way I don’t have to handle the parts with my hands while I paint.

Black undercoat

For white parts I did a black undercoat first. This will give the parts a shaded effect.

White + bit of navy blue applied

Next coat is white plus a drop of navy blue. The navy blue gives the white a ‘cold’ look, this is also because using just pure white looks a bit weird.

Preshading!

Above you can see the effect of the shading on the leg. But I’m not quite done yet, because the parts still look grey rather than white, I’m going to put another coat of pure white on top. But didn’t I just say pure white looks weird? Well yes, but it won’t be pure white, because white is opaque, and I can still get my cold white colour as well as shading in.

I had to stop at this point, because the stuff I did above took a good four hours and it was getting dark. White parts will hopefully be done this weekend!

Update 25/04/2009: Final white coat added.
