We are Celestial Being! – Ending #2 Arranged Battle Scene Production Notes

You’ve watched the video, now you want to know how it was made? Well here are the production notes for ending #2 to Innovation, We are Celestial Being!

The Video

The Plan

The idea for this one is simple – after their Mobile Suits were trashed in the previous battle, Celestial Being come back in a Super Robot and pulverize Ribbons Almark.

Inspiration for this ending came one day as I was re-watching the Gundam 00 movie, Awakening of the Trailblazer, with one of my friends. The movie contains a special scene in which the events of the series are depicted in an over-the-top parody motion picture titled “Celestial Being”. For those who haven’t seen it, here’s a clip on Youtube:

How awesome would it be if this was actually real?

With this, I came up with the idea that Celestial Being would return to face Ribbons in super-sentai-ish fashion. Each of the pilots would be responsible for handling some attack or part of the Super. I used the track “We are Celestial Being!” from the movie OST, which is the same music that’s used for the particular scene I drew inspiration from.

Why the Dancouga Nova?

The two choices I had in mind were the Final Dancouga, and the Dancouga Nova, for a few reasons. First is that these 2 have 5 pilots. Secondly, they are fairly well animated, and finally they have a variety of attacks that I could use for each member of Celestial Being. Other than that, anything you might think of is purely coincidental, although it’s true that CB and the DanNova team kinda had the same goals in Hakai Hen. Sol Gravion was out of the running because I had already used that in a previous video.

I actually favoured the Final Dancouga, but I felt that the animation and Dynamic Kill of DanNova’s sword attack was better than the Dankuukougaken for Setsuna’s “Raiser Sword” finisher.

Once that was decided, I actually started filming with Dancouga Nova MAX GOD, but it’s Dankuuhou attack was not quite what I had hoped for. I switched back to the stock DanNova and had them combine (with Marie’s help) midway through the video.

Anime cut-ins & Special Effects

I used clips from 00 Gundam, Awakening of the Trailblazer, and Dancouga Nova. The best part was creating the 5 panel scene in which Setsuna declares “We are Celestial Being!”. I used previous cut-ins, resized them and panelled them. It would’ve been better if I could’ve found face on cut-ins for each pilot.

This video didn’t really have that many special effects to work with, I just had to replace each pilot’s portrait correctly as they were executing each of their attacks.

Something that stuck me as funny in both films:

    The GN Drives.

Both of them of course have you start with Ribbons recovering one of the 00 Riser’s Solar Furnaces. I could actually see Ribbons having the Nu Gundam modified to accept a GN Drive in anticipation of either turning Amuro to his cause or just taking it for himself (Hell, the Reborns probably had a slot for the ZERO system). And while I know there’s no way you could’ve modded/animated that, the idea of a GN-equipped Nu Gundam is pretty scary.

The second ending of course brings up the question of the Furnaces Ribbons *didn’t* get. Zero is of course just the kind of person to fit a Super Robot with slots for GN Drives “just in case.” Perhaps it’s for the best that the Zero Requiem didn’t happen in your version ^_^.

I actually quite like your interpretation of the endings. If I could figure out how to put a GN trail onto the Nu Gundam, I think it’d clear up quite a bit of confusion as to how Ribbons got his hands on it in the first place.

    Maybe in the future 🙂
