MG Aegis Gundam WIP Part 2

Here are the white, blue and yellow parts of the Aegis, ready to prime and paint.

 

Back to the boxart for a second. From all the pictures of various Aegis’ I’ve seen online, I don’t like the drab blue they use. Instead, I quite like the look of that purplish blue on the box, so I’m going with that.

 

I start with a base coat of Blue (50%) + Red (40%) + White (10%). I end up with a mix that’s suspiciously close to Cobalt Blue. Excuse my messy-as work area.

 

I then do the highlights. I put a whole lot of White into the mix and spray in the centre of each panel. Finally I add even more White and spray a very, very, very small, faint highlight in the centre again.

 

Time for the Yellow parts. I start with a base coat of Orange. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the next step, which was to preshade these pieces with white.

 

I then spray a light coat of Orange Yellow (70%) + White (30%). Finally I add more White and some Yellow into the mix, and spray another very light highlight.

 

Finally, the white parts. In my last project, the Zeta Gundam, I used straight grey as a base coat. I think this made the white a bit less vibrant, so I went back to the method on my Force Impulse and used a Bluish Grey consisting of White (85%) + Neutral Grey (10%) + Navy Blue (5%).

 

The last step is to apply pure white on top. I think the blue really gives the white a ‘whiter-than-white’ look.

So far so good. This is my first experience working with a newish kit (the rest have been like 7+ years old!) so I’m pretty pleased at how smooth the process has been so far. I’ve only got the internal frame left to paint, which I’ll hopefully be able to do this weekend.
