MG Aegis Gundam WIP Part 1

Okay, okay, so I’ll try a bit harder to keep posting these WIPs. Welcome to my next kit, the MG Aegis Gundam.

I’m going to try finish building the entire GAT-X series this year, and after having painted the standard Gundam colours for the last 3 kits I thought I’d start with the Aegis first. It gives me a good opportunity to practice some of my red preshading.

As with most kits I start with the main colour first. Here are the ‘pink’ parts after priming and painted with a base coat. I used something similar out of the manual (Gunze paints), which is 50% White, 40% Wine Red, and 10% Orange. The end result is a sort of light orangey-red. Total time, about 1 hour.

Finally I dunk a whole bunch of white and some neutral grey into my mix and spray the highlights. This took about 1 1/2 hours. Usually the highlights I do are diminished after top coating, so I tried making the contrast bit bolder. The end result lost a bit of it’s orange shine, making me wish I’d added a bit more orange into the highlight coat.
Not sure if it bothers me enough to fix yet, but it’s hard to tell without seeing all the colours come together. What do you think?
