Chef Lagenda

February 20th, 2011 1 comment

16 Pin Oak Crescent, Flemington

Translated loosely, it means ‘legendary chef’ in Malay. Rumour has it that the chef at Laksa King had a falling out with management, and so decided to start his own restaurant… right next to Laksa King. Talk about competition, or revenge.

China Red

November 7th, 2010 3 comments

Shop 6, 206 Bourke St, Melbourne CBD

Having been enticed by waiters on our way out of Jalan Alor, we decided to give this place a try. China Red seemed to emulate the whole Hu Tong feel, from the chefs on display out the front displaying their prowess at speed-dumpling-making down to the crockery. Except that China Red boasts touchscreen menus! One touch ordering, no waiting to catch the every-busy waiter’s attention. Perfect for the i-generation, and for the process analysts like me who looooove automation and hate all things manual with a passion. So, is this all a gimmick, or do their dumplings pass the taste test? (yes, I know, someone’s been watching too much Masterchef!)

Having been on the hunt for good Malaysian hawker fare for which Melbourne seemed to be sadly lacking, I was pleasantly surprised to hear of a new place which has been rumoured to be “the real thing”.

Laksa King

August 23rd, 2010 1 comment

12 Pin Oak Crescent, Flemington

I finally had a chance to eat at the newly renovated Laksa King restaurant

Firstly, the place has come a long way from it’s small beginnings in that arcade at 320 Racecourse Road.  Laksa King now have their own fully furnished restaurant , and are now fully licensed to serve alcohol as well.

Despite the new facelift, is the good ol’ Laksa King the same one we love and remember?

A short while back Coconut House on Elizabeth Street underwent some renovations.  Shortly after it reopened, Little Coconut House appeared as well, just 3 doors down!  So what’s the difference?

Coconut House

449 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne CBD

This might not be the first place you’d think you’d find a Malaysian restaurant, but it’s actually one of the best I’ve had in the CBD, not to mention cheap!

If you’ve ever been to Malaysia, Coconut House is almost like one of those makan places you’d go eat at, from the decor down to the food.

Jade Hong Kong Cafe: Japanese Curry with Chicken

August 31st, 2009 No comments

Jade Hong Kong Cafe, on Carrington Road in Box Hill has it’s own unique take on the common Japanese dish.

For $9 you get a sizable bowl of rice, either cuumbed chicken or pork, topped with Japanese curry.  But Jade’s curry is unique in that it doesn’t taste like the standard katsu curry.   I can’t pin the taste down, but it’s got an extra punch that’s incredibly satisfying.

As I said before, you get a rather large helping of rice with this dish.  Most of the time it’s a real struggle for me to finish due to the sheer amount of rice.  Sadly in recent years this dish has gone up 50c in price,  just like almost everything else.
