Uncharted 4 – A Thief’s End E3 Roundup

It was no surprise that Uncharted 4 was going to make an appearance at this years’ E3. The full title of the game was revealed and we finally got to see some actual (but brief) footage of the game, which also states that the footage was captured straight from a PS4.

E3 2014 Trailer

We don’t get to see alot, but I think as with Uncharted 2 and 3, we usually only get a short teaser at E3’s with gameplay unveiled at other events throughout the year such as Spike VGAs or a Sony event. As expected of Naughty Dog, the game looks freakin’ gorgeous, though at the same time I also have some skepticism that it could be completely in game. In the past, Naughty Dog have been known to cheat at sometimes by pre-rendering some cutscenes for U2 and U3, but Digital Foundry seem to think that this trailer is indeed real-time rendered, with comments from ND that they are indeed targeting the 60FPS mark for in-game.

Someone also made a .webm version of the trailer that runs at 60fps and has some colour correction. You can view it here.

If a game can look this good on the PS4 now, imagine what games could look like at the end of the console’s cycle?

A Thief’s end

The game’s subtitle also opens up a whole new bucket of worms and has set the fanbase up for some rampant speculation. Will this be the last Uncharted game? Does someone die? Is this really going to be Drake’s last job? With the ring still on that finger as him getting on in the years, one does hope this is not the last Uncharted game, or even the last game Drake will be in.

Final comments

I have no doubt this game will look amazing, however after the disappointment that was Uncharted 3, this game NEEDS to be better than Uncharted 2, and to some extent, The Last of Us. U3 was kinda gimped by having a rushed release date as well as not having the benefit of having ND’s main team working on it. I’m now hoping that they’ll take the time they need to make this game as good as it can be, with it being their first real game on the PS4 after all.
